Is Outsourcing Estimates Becoming Normal for Growing Construction Companies?

I’ve been noticing a shift lately among mid-sized construction companies. A few years ago, most builders I knew handled all estimating in-house, even if it meant late nights reviewing drawings and updating spreadsheets. But now, with projects getting more detailed and deadlines tighter, that approach seems harder to maintain.

One contractor I spoke with recently mentioned he started using outsourced building estimating services when his company began bidding on larger projects. He said the biggest benefit wasn’t just saving time, but having more structured and detailed quantity breakdowns. It also allowed his internal team to focus more on site management and client coordination instead of being buried in takeoffs.

At the same time, I can understand the hesitation. Estimating is closely tied to profit margins, and many builders prefer to keep that control internally. I’m curious how others here are handling it. Are you still preparing every estimate in-house, or have you experimented with outsourcing when workload increases?

Would be interesting to hear real experiences especially from companies that recently scaled up.
