Jim’s Accessories Wishlist

Hi Rod,

Here are some accessories that either I would be interested in or I think others might be interested in. A couple I mentioned in another thread, but I thought it might be useful to add them here:

  1. “Roof top” cargo box. Similar to the roof rack cargo carriers on cars and SUVs but smaller and slimmer. Aerodynamic, light weight, fiberglass, clamshell design. This really opens up the options to take your bike, instead of a car, when you have something longer that you need to bring with you.
  2. Cross bars for the top like a roof rack. I suppose these would be simple enough for any owner to fabricate, but the idea is to have a couple cross bars across the top that you could secure larger items to. They don’t need to be very big to be useful. You may not want to encourage your customers to add bulky, top heavy items to their trailers, but few of us ride bikes because they are the most sensible option.
  3. 5 gallon bucket holders on the sides, so they can be used as panniers. I find the standard 5 gallon Home Depot bucket to be amazingly useful. Sturdy weatherproof cargo container. Get a lid shaped to be a seat and you have a sturdy seat at camp. Then add all the useful things you can do with a big bucket to get camp chores done. Consider square buckets as well as round so you can get more use of the space on the side of the trailer.
  4. Long cargo baskets. Also on the side, like a long pannier. Similar to what you find on cargo bicycles. They would be a good place to carry your groceries or various other odd shopping items and it could all be quickly secured with a simple bungee net on top.

Amazing feedback/ideas Jim. THANK YOU!!! One overall point is we want the ADV1 to be a platform that others can build ideas on. I've told a ton of people that have come to me with a accessory that if you want to make—and we think the product is well made, useful, and will not hurt the ADV1 or the owners—we will sell that accessory on our website for you! No need for you to make a website and do all that...we'll just add it to our list of products and sell them for you!

This is one I had never thought of. Like the cross bars below, that much weight up high worries me, but some type of shell that was lightweight and would hold be interesting. It would be competing, in my mind, with just a simple dry bag. But it would have some advantages (and disadvantages) over a dry bag.

You hit the nail on the head with my concern: facilitating adding too much weight up high. HOWEVER, I think this could be an amazing idea and already have a basic design in my head of how it might be made. It wouldn't be hard. Super interesting!

Another one that I would have never thought of and is so smart and practical! And it'd be pretty easy to do!

This one we have thought of. I've had two ideas...one would be almost like a cargo net/hammock for the side that would be super light weight and could hold a huge variety of things. It's be versatile, weigh next to nothing, and be quite inexpensive. The other is to have a full-length or maybe a 3/4-length lockable metal pannier for the side. We intend to adapt the ADV1 for our next model, the CRZ1 (for cruisers/Harleys). We think we could make a metal pannier that would be sleak and make the whole trailer look much more "Harley'esque." And we know who could make them for us almost without thought...the team that make our lockable internal storage box and our fender. They make metal boxes/tool cabinets all day, every day. They could make us a prototype probably within a week. But we have to find the time to design it! I've also thought that we could probably figure out a way to make a 3/4-length soft bag as well.

And I'm thinking 3/4 because if we left just enough room for a shelf, there would still be room for a cooler or a rotopax.

Hi Rod

To be honest, the only one of these I’m confident I would purchase would be the 5 gallon bucket holder. I’d probably buy 2.

The cargo basket would be my second most likely purchase. However, I would argue for full length, not 3/4. For me, I would use it when I’m doing local trips and errands. Not for an ADV trip. So I don’t need extra fuel or anything else next to it. I just want maximum utility and the ability to easily carry all my groceries or whatever. When I go on an ADV or other moto-camping trip, I’d pull off the basket and put on panniers. I only go on a few moto camping trips per year with my bigger bike, so most of the time I would have the trailer in cargo/utility mode (with cargo baskets) and only switch to ADV mode (with panniers/cooler/fuel) for a planned trip.

Regarding top box or cross bars, if they were available, I would still personally wait for a while and see if I really prove to have a need for them. I think you’r right that it’s tough to beat a long dry bag. Also, maybe your idea for J hooks solves most of the same problems.

"long cargo baskets"
I swear the first image in my head was 4077 MASH helicopters carrying wounded.
I carry a MC specific med kit, used once in 20 years, I wonder if first responders or bicycle cops could find a use for a lightweight trailer with an AED plus serious medkit?
Late night imagining aside, @Jim R love the simplicity of 5 gallon buckets and your other ideas!

Well, they say that when brainstorming, there are no bad ideas. I just might prove that what they say is wrong with my next ideas...

5. Wheelbarrow handles! Either detachable or fold down at the front near the hitch. One use would be to easily move it around the garage or from the driveway to the garage. I imagine that maneuvering the bike with the trailer is a bit awkward, so just leaving the bike in the driveway and bringing the trailer to it or to the garage is the way to go. Quicker and easier the better. Also, and even more ridiculous, but maybe using the trailer as a wheelbarrow is something that could be useful at camp to lug firewood or water or a kid or whatever. The hinge would be one of several likely dealbreakers, but how could I not share my idea for the world’s most expensive wheelbarrow!

6. Mini billboard. This one is not so much for the customers as for Pasq. Make little billboards with the Pasq logo/website/QR code or any other advertising that can stand vertically and lengthwise on the trailer. Kind of like a smaller version of what you see on the roof of some taxis. There’s not really anything in it for the customer, but some people like displaying branded material of a product they identify with and are happy to play the role of a brand ambassador. Also, maybe Pasq could offer them for free to customers in exchange for pictures of the trailer with the billboard at certain events (ADV rallies, Sturgis, Daytona, Laconia, etc…). If it looked cool, I would consider it.

Great minds and all that.
I nudged the boys about a QR code or logoing on the shelf when it is folded up.
And I've tried to move the ADV1 around like a wheelbarrow but the trap wants to do it's thing. Maybe with a patented backup device...

Excellent ideas Jim! Yes, this would make a very expensive wheelbarrow. I like the ideas of the fold out handles. I already have a design for locking the trap hinge for maneuvering around without a bike but it needs to be updated. A mini billboard would be fairly easy to create as well.

Tony, I talked with Rod on the QR code and he also thinks this is a great idea! Figuring out size and location(s).

FWIW, the shelf option has foldout supports, maybe use the same at one end? However, having looked at Tony's ADV1, I saw the two holes at the forward end and thought that a simple handle running between them, maybe rope/twine/cable could be a simple solution?

Random thought to consider: Maybe create a distinction between “On-road only” accessories and “ADV accessories”. For example, I would use a long box on top, or a cargo basket on the sides for running errands or a road trip that had smooth, paved roads only. I wouldn’t take them where I would have to deal with rougher terrain and needed to be more nimble.

I can think of 3 places for the QR code. Make them reflective and between the tail lights and either side of the hitch. Maybe a couple different sizes. Maybe 1 or 2" square.
